Where New York Mets Fans Get Their Fix

New York Mets Podcast #15

Subway Series Round 1 Recap.

Show Notes

  • Subway Series Part I
    • Game 1 – Jeremi Gonzalez is a disaster but so is Randy Johnson. Beltran big 3 run homer plus bullpen combo of Oliver, Heilman and Wagner get Mets to the 9th inning. David Wright beats Mariano Rivera and Johnny Damon with a walk off single after a Paul LoDuca double and intentional walk to Carlos Delgado. Mets win 7-6.
    • Game 2 – Pedro Martinez outduels Mike Mussina with seven scoreless innings. Billy Wagner implodes in the 9th inning. Jorge Julio can't hold the lead and Mariano Rivera closes out the game for a 5-4 Yankee win. Ugh!
    • Game 3 – Tom Glavine gives up two runs in six innings. Carlos Delgado (3 Run HR) and David Wright hit back to back blasts off of Aaron Small for all of the Mets offense. Billy Wagner returns to pitch a shaky but scoreless ninth inning for the save. Mets win 4-3.
  • Mets – Phils series coming up with awful pitching matchups for the Mets. At least they're home games.
  • What moves will Omar make to shore up the Mets pitching rotation? And please don't trade our prospects away…
  • Alay Soler scheduled to pitch this week against Phils. Mike Pelfrey has a poor outing in AA. And Jose Lima gets shown the door.

  1. Mets take 2 of 3 from Yanks! We needed it, we could have swept if wagner was able to slam the door in the 9th.. I think Willie should have left sanchez in there to start the 9th up 4-0 and if he got in trouble then you bring in wagner but none the less he should have been able to shut the door with a 4-0 lead. I think David Wright broke out in this seris with a couple big blows, Delgado continues to roll and I saw him in an interview on monday as he was talking about the seris with the yankees and the mets team overall and he seems like he’s having a real good time with this mets team. They def. have real good chemistry, now lets go get those Philies hu? LETS GO METS!

  2. I see you like to be the arbiter of what makes a “true Mets fan” – like real Mets fans care more about beating the Yankees than the Phillies??? What’s with that. Well here’s one – Real Mets Fans have realized the Kazmir trade was ancient history and don’t waste their energy bemoaning it – why not gripe about Nolan Ryan while you’re at it.

    Comment by Phoola | May 23, 2006

  3. Absolutely. Mets fans get excited about playing the Yankees. Mets fans want to beat the Yankees. If you were to list the teams that Mets fans relish beating, you'd probably see the Yankees and Braves 1-2 on every list. That's the history. That's the fact. Why do the Yankees games at Shea consistently sell out? Have you been to a Mets-Yankees game at Shea (or Yankee Stadium)? I've been to both stadiums and the atmosphere is electric. It's much more exciting than any other regular season game. And it's that way because the fans care and want their team to win in the worst way.

As far as Kazmir is concerned. Not nearly ancient history. Very recent history and plenty of fans will be eyeing his progress hoping he doesn't turn out to be the best pitcher in the AL. It's a situation that needs to be referenced as a cautionary tale for the Mets organization during this time of turmoil with the starting rotation. So before they think of trading a Milledge or a Pelfrey for someone to get it done now, they should think about what they're getting and think about the consequences of letting good prospects go too soon.

  4. Okay, maybe now we can all get along :)

Is the game still going on? What inning we in?

A long one last night. At least the Mets will have the psychological momentum, because the bullpen is mush for tonight.

  5. Wow that was one of the best games Ive ever seen. The Mets just kept coming back and then Beltrans homer in the 16th wow great game.

  6. New to this bloging thing, what makes this any different than a message board?

  7. Not a bad start for Soler. Two earned runs over six innings and regaining composure after a sloppy first inning. Mets still need to win the game but I like the early results.

And then we get the announcement that the Mets acquire El Duque for Jorge Julio. Darn :( Just as I was warming up to Jorge. We needed a starter so hopefully Hernandez can turn it around with the Mets.

  8. Just what we need, another injured starter. At least this one comes pre-injured so we don’t have the suspense of when he will go down. Looks like Minaya’s sudden fondness for Cubans seeking millions is coming around to hurt us. Just when Julio starting to show some pop.

We need youth Omar, not players that make you feel young again.

    Comment by Dan S | May 24, 2006

  9. Looking at El Duque’s numbers this year it’s quite obvious that there’s a problem there. He only has a couple of good starts this year. And he was 9-9 last year. So not sure if this is a smart move at a time when they were doing a good job turning Jorge Julio into a decent setup man.

The interesting thing is that we may get a chance to go up against Julio next week when the D’Backs come to town.

    Comment by Rob | May 24, 2006

  10. El Duque played for a crappy team so Ill give him the benefit of the doubt now that hes pitching for a team that scores more runs than Az, and also a better pitchers park. Im gonna be optimistic until otherwise. Remember hee did pitch well last year for the White Sox.

    Comment by Dan | May 25, 2006

  11. Yeah, it looks like Benson for Julio – > Julio for Hernandez and we got the short end of that deal each time. Julio was being under-utilized but we could have gotten much better for him than this tired arm and sore back. I read somewhere that Omar thinks he could be a “leader” – come on, we have enough “leadership” between Pedro, Glavine and Franco, now we need the muscles that will power us through August and September. This trade gets a big D minus.

  12. Question for the next podcast. Do you think Willie should have thrown Pedro Martinez instead of Jeremi Gonzalez on Wednesday?

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 but I thought he should have thrown Pedro prior to game time.

    Comment by Rob | May 26, 2006

  13. I think if the Mets had lost the first two games of the Philly series this might have been a much bigger issue, but once we’d already won the series it became a smaller issue.
The Mets like to get Pedro extra rest when there’s an off-day, so, lacking an emergency I guess it’s best that they followed a plan.
(That being said, it probably would have been nice to give the Mets fans at Shea another chance to cheer for Pedro.)

  14. I think that winning the Phillies series was good enough, though I was ready to get the brooms out… again.

I’m also glad Jose Reyes is getting some homers. We need some more of those. Cliff is getting better, as well… We’ve also seen some “Beltran Blasts” as we call them.

As I type, Miguel just scored on Mr. Pedro Martinez. Let’s win this one. The Marlins are 14-31, after all. LETS GO METS!

    Comment by Mets Lover :) | May 26, 2006

  15. A couple of days off for me. Good win today. Mets needed it after failing to support Pedro last night. Meanwhile Glavine’s season is shaping up nicely.

Lots of activity this week to talk about so I’m getting ready to record another podcast later tonight.
