Cmon Over To The New Site
Hey Mets fans. I’ve ported things over to a new site that offers lots of new possibilities. You’ll see the same look and feel, but with added features that I couldn’t offer being on WordPress.com. I’ll also be able to expand functionality as the demand for it increases. I’m still working on porting the comments over so these pages are staying as is for now. Check it out at www.newyorkmetspodcast.com.
New York Mets Podcast #17
It’s only been a couple of days since the last show, but so much has happened.
I attended the Monday night game at Shea Stadium, my first of 2006. My brother and I sat through a pair of rain delays but got to see most of the game. Trachsel didn’t have good stuff, again! But the Mets bats were cracking and they held a 6-4 lead over the Diamondbacks going into the 7th inning. Aaron Heilman gave it all back and then some by giving up a 3 run homer on an 0-2 pitch with 2 outs. But the Mets win anyway thanks to the clutch pinch hit and speed of Endy Chavez, plus the top of the Mets lineup with David Wright hitting another walk off single to center field.
Pedro Martinez is next up in this series and we really need to support him with some runs so that the Mets can get their fourth straight series win.
Looks like the Matsui benching is paying off so far for Willie Randolph with Valentin producing with the bat. Cliff Floyd is coming out of his early season slumber. Both are very nice developments.
Looking back, El Duque did not give us a quality start on Sunday but the Mets brought the bats out again to get the win and the series win. Looking at tonight’s game. Ugh! Bad start by Alay Soler. The Mets didn’t hit much with runners on base but we can’t expect them to score 8 runs a game every time. Carlos Delgado is still in a real bad slump too.
Of course, the big news is that Lastings Milledge made his major league debut due to Xavier Nady’s appendicitis. Milledge had a hit in the game and no flubs in the field. Still very early with this kid and unless he does something spectacular he’s sure to go down to AAA when Nady returns. Still, it will be interesting to see how Willie uses him over the next couple of weeks.
Let’s Go Mets!
New York Mets Podcast #16
A recap of the Phillies series plus the first two games of the series with the Marlins. A big week for the Mets with trades picking up a starter in Orlando Hernandez and a reliever in Mike Adams. The Mets say goodbye to Jorge Julio in the El Duque deal which means that the Mets essentially dealt Kris Benson for Hernandez. The team also says goodbye to Jeremi Gonzalez who failed to give us a quality start.
Meanwhile, Alay Soler had a promising outing on Wednesday night, settling down after some early control problems. He gave the Mets an unexpected boost mid-series that helped the team take 2 of 3 from Philadelphia. Carlos Beltran and David Wright have been huge in keeping the Mets on top of the division over the last two weeks.
Anyone notice that it's the Braves and not the Phillies who are directly behind the Mets in the Eastern Division?
Tough to see Pedro go to the mound and take yet another loss after a quality start. But it happened Friday night. Thankfully, Tom Glavine was supported in spades on Saturday as the Mets took a 7-4 victory.
Seems like some members of the Mets bullpen have been shaky lately. I hope it's not a developing trend. Now for El Duque's debut.

New York Mets Podcast #15
Subway Series Round 1 Recap.
Show Notes
- Subway Series Part I
- Game 1 – Jeremi Gonzalez is a disaster but so is Randy Johnson. Beltran big 3 run homer plus bullpen combo of Oliver, Heilman and Wagner get Mets to the 9th inning. David Wright beats Mariano Rivera and Johnny Damon with a walk off single after a Paul LoDuca double and intentional walk to Carlos Delgado. Mets win 7-6.
- Game 2 – Pedro Martinez outduels Mike Mussina with seven scoreless innings. Billy Wagner implodes in the 9th inning. Jorge Julio can't hold the lead and Mariano Rivera closes out the game for a 5-4 Yankee win. Ugh!
- Game 3 – Tom Glavine gives up two runs in six innings. Carlos Delgado (3 Run HR) and David Wright hit back to back blasts off of Aaron Small for all of the Mets offense. Billy Wagner returns to pitch a shaky but scoreless ninth inning for the save. Mets win 4-3.
- Mets – Phils series coming up with awful pitching matchups for the Mets. At least they're home games.
- What moves will Omar make to shore up the Mets pitching rotation? And please don't trade our prospects away…
- Alay Soler scheduled to pitch this week against Phils. Mike Pelfrey has a poor outing in AA. And Jose Lima gets shown the door.
Lets Go Mets!
New York Mets Podcast #14
Licking our wounds from a bad week. The Mets drop three consecutive series to the Phillies, Brewers and now the Cardinals. The back end of the pitching rotation is mush with Jose Lima and Jeremi Gonzalez pulling up the rear. And what a bad omen, wasting a good performance by Steve Trachsel and losing 1-0 last night.
Now is the time that the Mets bats need to wake up and support an ailing pitching staff. I would kill for a Billy Wagner save opportunity. There’s not denying that the Mets need to make a strong statement by beating the Yankees this weekend and in the process, maintainig their slim lead in the NL East.
With the least at only two games over the Phillies, this is a do or die weekend for the Mets. I like the pitching match ups, but will the Mets bats sing a sweet song? Damn, I hope so.
